Hortix creates gardens that bring food, flowers and everyday life closer together. We shape beautiful outdoor spaces with more to enjoy through the seasons: flowers for the house, herbs for the kitchen, fruit from the garden and places to spend time well.
Based in York and working across Yorkshire, we bring together planning, consturction, planting, irrigation and garden creation to make gardens that are generous in their planting, practical in the way they work and rewarding to live with.
A horticultural point of view
We believe a garden can be a place to gather, grow, eat, rest and notice the seasons changing. It can bring colour, scent, harvest and life closer to home, while becoming a setting for time spent well outdoors.
The right infrastructure and balance of hard landscaping, healthy soil, well-chosen plants, reliable watering and a generous layer of mulch create the conditions for a garden to grow beautifully and remain straightforward to care for.
Every garden is connected: sunlight, water, soil, structure and planting all influence one another. Hortix considers these elements together, creating spaces that settle into their surroundings, mature well and become more enjoyable with time.
From the founder
Hortix grew from a lifelong connection with growing and the outdoors. I began growing food with my family as a child, while my father’s work as a gamekeeper meant the natural world was part of everyday life from an early age.
I have always been outside and that lifestyle became a career in construction and then growing. I worked with the talented team at The Black Swan at Oldstead, helping to develop a small market garden into a multi-acre operation, before building my own market farm and supplying produce and foraged ingredients to chefs across Yorkshire.
Those experiences showed me how much flavour, variety and enjoyment can come from well-grown plants — and how food, flowers and nature can make everyday life richer when they are close at hand.
Why Hortix exists
Hortix was created to get people outside. We combine knowledge of food, flowers and growing with skills in construction to rethink the potential of domestic gardens. We see an opportunity for gardens to offer more: plants to pick, flowers for the vase, fruit to share, room for children to explore and planting that supports a lively, healthy environment.
Whether the project is a new layer of planting, a productive space or an entire garden transformation, the aim is the same: to create a garden that feels beautiful, useful and deeply enjoyable to live with.
